Two cortical representations of voice control are differentially involved in speech fluency

چکیده

Abstract Recent studies have identified two distinct cortical representations of voice control in humans, the ventral and dorsal laryngeal motor cortex. Strikingly, while persistent developmental stuttering has been linked to a white-matter deficit cortex, intensive fluency-shaping intervention modulated functional connectivity network. Currently, it is unknown whether underlying structural network organization these or differently shaped by intervention. Using probabilistic diffusion tractography 22 individuals who stutter participated fluency shaping intervention, 18 did not participate 28 participants, we here compare networks cortex test intervention-related changes. We show (i) that all participants weaker connections compared network, regardless speech fluency, (ii) were stronger fluent speakers, (iii) profile predicted severity (iv) but resistant Our findings substantiate imply assisted recovery supports neural compensation rather than normalization. Moreover, resulting dissociation provides evidence for functionally segregated roles networks.

Cortical Representations of Speech in a Multitalker Auditory Scene.

The ability to parse a complex auditory scene into perceptual objects is facilitated by a hierarchical auditory system. Successive stages in the hierarchy transform an auditory scene of multiple overlapping sources, from peripheral tonotopically based representations in the auditory nerve, into perceptually distinct auditory-object-based representations in the auditory cortex. Here, using magne...

Two insular regions are differentially involved in behavioral variant FTD and nonfluent/agrammatic variant PPA.

The non-fluent/agrammatic variant of primary progressive aphasia (nfvPPA) and the behavioral variant frontotemporal dementia (bvFTD) are focal neurodegenerative disorders belonging to the FTD-spectrum clinical syndromes. NfvPPA is characterized by effortful speech and/or agrammatism and left frontal atrophy, while bvFTD is characterized by social-emotional dysfunction often accompanied by right...

Control and representations in speech production

In this paper the issue of the nature of the representations of the speech production task in the speaker's brain is addressed in a production-perception interaction framework. Since speech is produced to be perceived, it is hypothesized that its production is associated for the speaker with the generation of specific physical characteristics that are for the listeners the objects of speech per...

SPEECH RECOGNITION for VOICE BASED CONTROL

In this paper, we describe a typical approach for implementing a voice based control solution. Isolated word speech recognition is performed using cepstral feature extraction and hidden Markov modeling of speech. The merit of this document lies in the amalgamation of the simplest yet most successful relevant methods into a coherent design guideline, aiming to trivialize the integration of speec...
